Union Stockyards Gate: The original entrance to the Union Stockyards is the only remnant of the meatpacking operation today. This arching gate has been around since 1875 and is one of Chicago’s oldest landmarks. The cow head in the center is an excellent touch. In the small park area, there is also a memorial to the 1910 fire at the Stockyards. Trace the origins of the Chicago Bulls’ team identity right here.
Sherman Park: The architect who designed the Union Stockyard Gates also had a hand in creating Sherman Park. In fact, the park is named after his father, who was also the founder of the Stockyards itself. Much like the Gate, Sherman Park is also a historic landmark. The park is known for its murals on the fieldhouse and gyms. A creek also circles a small island that can be accessed by a bridge. Every field sport can be played here.
Cornell Square Park: Here is another park in Back of The Yards that is at least 100 years old. All these parks were created so the booming immigrant population would have such amenities. This park was named after the founder of Cornell University and had a Beaux-Arts-styled fieldhouse. The playground and fields are new, but the fieldhouses’ facilities like the pool were original features.
Davis Square Park: All the parks we’ve been looking at are ones designed by the Burnham company, which also owned the Union Stockyards. Davis Square Park is no exception. The original fieldhouse is strikingly similar to the one at Cornell and Sherman, in fact. This park, over a century old, is named after Nathan Smith Davis, one of the founders of the American Medical Association. This park features a baseball diamond and swimming pool.
Guaranteed Rate Field: Guaranteed Rate Field is a baseball stadium located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It serves as the home stadium of the Chicago White Sox, one of the city’s two Major League Baseball teams, and is owned by the state of Illinois through the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. Completed at a cost of US$137 million, the park opened as Comiskey Park on April 18, 1991, taking its name from the former ballpark at which the White Sox had played since 1910. In 2003, it was renamed U.S. Cellular Field after Chicago-based telecommunications company U.S. Cellular purchased the naming rights at US$68 million for 20 years. The stadium’s current name was announced on October 31, 2016, after the Chicago-based private residential mortgage company Guaranteed Rate purchased the naming rights in a 13-year deal. Guaranteed Rate Field is situated just to the west of the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago’s Armour Square neighborhood, adjacent to the more famous neighborhood of Bridgeport. The stadium was built directly across 35th Street from the original Comiskey Park, which was demolished to make room for a parking lot for the new venue.
